Notes: Born and educated in Dundee, Adam Duncan, Viscount Duncan (1731–1804), began his naval career in 1746, becoming involved in naval expeditions during the Seven Years' War and the American War of Independence, where he worked with the Channel Fleet, assisted in the relief of Gibraltar in 1779, and in the battle off Cape St Vincent the following year. In 1793, he was appointed commander-in-chief of the North Sea, a post which led to his success at the Battle of Camperdown in 1797. ODNB.
