Notes: Gavin Hamilton (1723-1798), painter, studied at Glasgow University before travelling to Rome where he trained in portrait painting at the Accademia di San Luca. He was influenced by classical art and culture, and visited Herculaneum and Pompeii while in Italiy. He moved to London where he found business producing portraits of the family of the duke of Hamilton, to whom he was distantly related, but his interest remained in classical subjects, of which he painted several grand figures and scenes. He later returned to Italy where he was renowned as both a painter and for his involvement in the excavation of Roman remains. ODNB.
