Person details

Frederick (forename)

Title: Duke

Notes: Prince Frederick, duke of York and Albany (1763–1827), the second son of George III. His father's title of elector of Hanover enabled him to use his influence to bring about Frederick's election as bishop of Osnabrück, a post which he retained until 1803. He began a career in the army as a colonel in November 1780, and was active in Flanders during several campaigns alongside the Austrian army of the prince of Coburg in 1793–5. He later turned to military reform, but his reputation was compromised by his love of gambling and his ill-advised liaisons with women, especially Mary Anne Clarke. ODNB.
