Notes: The cartographer John Evans (1723–1795) was born at Llwyn-y-groes, Llanymynech, on the Montgomeryshire-Shropshire border. His map of north Wales on a scale of almost one inch to a mile and published in sheets in 1795, was a worthy precursor to the Ordnance Survey one-inch maps. A smaller-scale edition was posthumously published in 1797. Pennant recorded his indebtedness to John Evans for correcting a generally-held misconception regarding 'Wat's ditch' near Holywell, in A tour in Wales 1770 [1773] (1778), I, pp. 21–2. He also noted here the latter's work on 'a large map' of the area in question, a project 'extremely worthy of public encouragement'. DWB.
