Gough, Richard

Title: Mr

Notes: The publications of the antiquary Richard Gough (1735–1809) included an edition of Camden’s Britannia (1789), which was achieved using a network of antiquarian friends and correspondents. His Sepulchral Monuments (2 vols. and later introduction, 1786, 1796, 1799), was intended to illustrate the ‘history of the Families, Manners, Habits and Arts from the Norman conquest’, and valued chiefly for its illustrations, engraved by James Basire. Director of the Society of Antiquaries (1771–97), fellow of the Royal Society (1775–95) and regular correspondent with the Gentleman's Magazine, Gough was enabled to commit himself unreservedly to his own antiquarian researches and to helping other antiquaries from a position of independent fortune, conferred upon him on the deaths of his parents in 1751 and 1774.
